It's give back Friday, not Black Friday

It's give back Friday, not Black Friday

When you think of Black Friday, words like sustainability or empowerment are usually far from your mind.

Instead, you might think of deep discounts, special offers, and new pieces to add to your wardrobe. You may even think of shopping frenzies, mobs, and riots at Walmart.

In short, Black Friday has always been about me, me, me.

But what if Black Friday (and the act of shopping, in general) could mean something more? What if every purchase you made was thoughtful, meaningful, AND actually helped someone?

That may seem like wishful thinking, but it’s not. Shopping can be an impactful act of giving back.

And it all begins with rethinking what and how you buy.

This means knowing the story behind your products. Asking questions like: Who made them? How were those people treated? What’s this item’s environmental impact? How does my purchase affect people and planet?

During the frenzy of Black Friday, these questions are swept under the rug. We’re definitely not here to cast blame.

We’re here because it’s time for an alternative.

GIVE BACK FRIDAY (NOT BLACK FRIDAY)

For six days starting Thursday November 24th until Giving Tuesday (Tuesday November 29th at midnight –EST ), we’re running Give Back Friday: a campaign to bring the conversation away from “me, me, me” and towards “all of us”.

At Cambio Market, we’ve always been passionate about sharing stories of our artisans and the impact behind every product. That’s why we only work with partners who believe in transparency, sustainability, who pay workers fair wages, and provide healthy work conditions.

With the Black Friday craze, we’re more adamant than ever about putting people and impact front and centre.

That’s why, to counteract the usual Black Friday dialogue, we’re taking our work one step further.

During the next six days, we’re donating 20% of every online purchase to the non-profit Lifeline Syria.

Lifeline Syria is a non-profit organization that welcomes and helps Syrian refugee families resettle and build new lives in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Why Lifeline Syria?

With the overt racism, hate speech, and hate crimes that have spread worldwide, it’s more important than ever to stand up for what’s right. We stand by organizations like Lifeline Syria that aim to create inclusive communities, to engage citizens, and to help the most vulnerable among us.

Give Back Friday couldn’t have come soon enough.

Lifeline Syria recruits and helps private sponsors to welcome and support refugee families within their first year in Canada. They also engage the local Syrian community in their programming, so all stakeholders are involved in creating an integrated, inclusive community. Founded in 2015, Lifeline Syria has already received a humanitarian award for their work and has sparked other lifeline chapters to crop up in other cities.

We are so excited and proud to support Lifeline Syria and hope you join us in changing the dialogue.

Say it with us, loud and proud: it’s Give Back Friday, not Black Friday.
